What it does

Redact takes a document, works out what classification it carries and why, then removes exactly the content holding it at that level — so the file can move down a step. Secret to classified. Classified to public. Whatever levels your scheme uses, to whatever target you choose.

The distinction matters. Most redaction tools start from a list of things to strip and hope the result is releasable. Redact starts from the classification decision and works backwards: this document sits at this level because of these passages, and here is the file with those passages resolved.

How it works

Two passes. The first classifies the document against your scheme and identifies the specific content driving the level — not categories in the abstract, but the paragraph, the figure, the name, the operational detail. The second acts on that finding: remove, generalise, or refer for human decision, according to policy.

You see the reclassification before it happens. Every released file ships with a signed record showing what was removed, on what basis, and who approved it — the artefact your review authority needs when someone asks why this document was cleared.

Deployment & governance

API-first, or run as a guarded batch service, or installed on-prem where the material cannot leave your network. Classification policy lives in version control; reviewer overrides are audited. Redact is domain-agnostic by design — a defence marking scheme, a commercial confidentiality ladder, and a ministry’s own levels are all just schemes, and the product does not assume which one you use.
